The Scarab slot uses a 5×4 grid for gameplay, which is one of the more common online slots layouts. There are 75 paylines, which is above the average for the industry. However, it’s below what Megaways slots offer, as they cover every possible winning way. You need at least 3 matching symbols on a line for most symbols, with the Princess only needing 2. 

You can wager between 75p and £2,250 per spin in the Scarab slot game. It’s without a doubt higher than any other new slots, and gives high rollers solid wagering options. It blew my mind while I was putting together my Scarab review. You can’t play with £1 spins, so I had to use £3 in the free slots version. The stake and spin controls are at the bottom, and you can set up autoplay, but it’s not available at UK online casinos. 

The Scarab RTP is 96% as standard. It’s around the average for most slots, but unfortunately, there are RTP ranges. This means you must check slot sites to avoid lower values, which can hit 93%. There’s a low to medium volatility, which was obvious while playing the Scarab demo. 

You can only grab 200x your stake as the Scarab max win. It’s frustrating, and keeps it well below the best real money slots. While the volatility is relatively low, it’s still one of the lowest payouts I’ve come across. The Free Spins are the best way to get higher wins, but with no multipliers, it limits what’s possible.

Scarab Theme—Ancient Egypt With a Retro Feel

The moment you load up Scarab casinos, you’ll see that it has a retro style. The symbols look as though they have come from the previous era of slot games, which is slightly disappointing. It uses a semi-realistic style, which is quite colourful, but has lots of room for improvement. I don’t mind the visuals here, but I’d prefer something more modern.

The sounds are a high point, and IGT has put some time into them. It plays a tune that fits the theme, and you get voice acting at certain points. It helps to add some excitement and boosts what the theme offers.

Scarab Mobile Slot

In the Scarab mobile slot, there’s a solid changeover from desktop. It retains the image quality, has the same control scheme, and the sounds don’t lose any clarity. As it uses HTML5, all platforms keep the same design. 

Whether you want to play portrait or landscape, there’s not much difference here. Landscape is slightly better as it gives a bigger view of the reels, but portrait is still fine for most mobile casino players.

The Scarab bonus features are relatively simple, and there are just 2 available in the game. 

Wild Stays, Charges, Then Pays

This feature works on a cycle of 10 spins at a time during the base game. Whenever a scarab symbol lands during the cycle, it leaves a frame on that space. Then, on the 10th spin, all frames turn into wild symbols. It means the final spin has the chance to create the biggest wins. If you change your stake level before the cycle ends, the cycle resets to the first spin.

Free Spins

When you land at least 3 scatters on the reels, it triggers the Free Spins feature. You get to choose from 3 different modes, each offering a different choice of spins and wilds. The table below shows the number of spins and random wilds you can get for the round

During the Free Spins, you can retrigger it up to 4 times in total. The spins are awarded based on what you chose to begin the round.

The simple gameplay is the main pro for Scarab, but it’s let down by the low maximum payout.

Pros

• Easy for beginners
• Up to 225 Free Spins available
• It’s possible to land a full screen of wilds

Cons

• The top payout is minuscule

There are a few nice aspects of Scarab, but overall, it doesn’t keep up with modern slots. The visuals are acceptable, but they don’t compare to the latest releases. The bonus features are okay, and the wilds on the 10th spin of each cycle keep the base game interesting. 

However, the maximum win is just much too low. At 200x your stake, it is well below even the lowest volatility slots. It stops Scarab from being competitive, and really doesn’t make it worth your while. If you’re looking for an Egyptian-themed slot to try, this isn’t the one.
